Cookie-points go to Mikero, Yam and Lunche for naming all but one of the references in the last comic. I wasn't expecting anyone to get the griffon one, so: It's a line in "The Midnight Story on Griffon Hill" by Margaret Mahy. It's in a collection of Mahy's children's stories in a book called The Chewing-Gum Rescue and Other Stories... Though personally, the only time anyone is "too old" for a children's story is when they're rotting in their coffin. Also: I'm deliberately not using line tools in anything aside from panel borders. And you can't stop me! Bahahahaaa! (Note on Sept 4 2006: "Line tool" is yubi-talk for "any tool that lets me make perfectly straight or perpendicular lines.)
